June 12- Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola

For the "young" ones wondering what June 12 is all about......Well,

On June 12, 1993 presidential elections were held in Nigeria, which most observers deemed to be Nigeria's fairest. Early returns indicated that wealthy Yoruba businessman M.K.O. Abiola won a decisive victory.

However, Babangida, using several pending lawsuits as a pretense,  annulled the election, throwing Nigeria into turmoil.

More than 100 were killed in riots before Babangida agreed to hand power to an interim government.

After all these wahala, Abiola started declaring himself as the president of Nigeria and he was arrested and imprisoned for Treason. He died on the 7th of July 1998 when he was due to be released from prison. They said he died of natural causes and also there is speculation that Al Mustapha,  Abacha's chief security officer beat him to death and he is still in detention.

President Goodluck Jonathan  today admitted that June 12,  late Chief M.K.O Abiola won the nation’s freest and fairest election 20 years ago has changed the history of the country for good. (does that mean elections are now fair in Nigeria? I don't so)

Speaking shortly after inaugurating the chairman and members of the re-constituted Police Service Commission, Jonathan said June 12 was a unique day in the nation.

The President said although the Federal Government has yet to recognize the day as public holiday, some state governments were already doing so.
